Can I become a faster runner?

Why do some people seem to run fast with ease? Is it natural ability or consistent training over a few years? Do they push harder, dig deeper?

I keep wondering why am I a slow runner? Why does running seem so hard for me?

I have been looking for inspiration from other runners. Runners that have started off at my pace and are now faster, much faster, but until now I have had no luck. The runners I have spoken to have always started their running journey faster, much faster than where I am now, even after I've been running for a year. But inspiration came recently when I met a runner attempting a 100 miler. We chatted and I discovered that her starting point times are very similar to what mine are now, but through training she is now much faster.

In the past I have trained for a few months or a year for events, then stopped, discouraged and even now I regularly become discouraged at how slow I am but I think of my friend and I feel inspired to keep running, to discover what might be possible for me, to discover how fast I can become.

How fast do I want to be? I would love to become fast and strong enough to complete the regular running events within cut off and be back in time to socialise. I would like to be able to qualify for running races, in particular the Wonderland Run in the Grampians. I would like to be fast enough to keep up with the back of the pack at social runs.

This year I will keep training consistently to discover how fast I can become, whilst I'm still having fun.
